Next to the church where they were married, Daniels stands by the grave of his first wife, Pat Daniels. During long days of outreach work, Daniels said he visits Patís grave to dust off the leaves that have fallen on her headstone, to bring her flowers and, most importantly, to remember the 20 years they spent together. Though she never used drugs, Danielsí wife died of HIV after contracting it from him. ìI have this shame and guilt I carry with me because of what happened to my wife,î Daniels said during an interview with a friend. ìWithin a few years I lost my wife, my brother, two cousins and many friends, all to HIV ñ it was a gift that kept on killing.î
