Charleston shooting suspect Dylann Roof is escorted from the Shelby Police Department in Shelby, N.C. on Thursday, June 18, 2015. After a massive manhunt, police apprehended Roof during a traffic strop in Shelby, N.C. after receiving a tip from a motorist.

Roof entered Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC on June 17, 2015 and quietly sat through around an hour of bible study before pulling out a pistol and killing nine people. Joey Meek, a friend of Roof, told The associated Press that Roof had drunkenly complained that “blacks were taking over the world” and “someone needed to do something about it for the white race.” Roof faces state and federal charges including nine murder counts, hate crimes, and obstruction of the practice of religion.
